ABOUT US

BUSEMA
Where we are and where we are going.

BUSEMA consists of a group of medical students with specialist interests in the medicine, surgery and physiology of space and extreme environments as well as the feats of engineering that stem from it.

We offer talks, an annual conference and further chances to explore the extremes of space, temperature, altitude, and depth, alongside the latest advances in medical technology and engineering.

In the future, we hope to establish student-led multi-centre research projects surrounding our pillars and aim to incorporate training into the national undergraduate medical curriculum.

The 5 Pillars

Space

Temperature

Altitude

Depth

Engineering

  • 01

    Space

How does the human body reacts to microgravity and prolonged space travel? Our understanding of this complex relationship determines our capacity for space exploration and eventual interplanetary colonisation.

  • 02

    Temperature

The extremes of temperature have profound effects upon the human body. Can we understand and enhance our ability to adapt to them?

  • 03

    Altitude

The oxygen deprivation experienced by those adventurers who choose to tackle the tallest of peaks is significant. Through research and technological innovation, we may be able to  improve the mortality rate of oxygen starved individuals atop mountains, and in hospital bays.

  • 04

    Depth

The last Earth-bound frontier, the great Seas and Oceans, are largely unexplored. The great weight of pressure at depth remains our biggest hurdle to overcome.

  • 05

    Engineering

Knowledge is but the first step. It is the application of knowledge as technology that is the second.
